About Me
Hello, my name is Aditi Sharma. I am 17 years old and a rising senior at Montgomery High School in New Jersey. I am a part of the Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey in troop 60193. I am very passionate about helping my community, especially through my Girl Scouts volunteering and projects. I have always known to recycle and of global warming, however my passion for this topic started once I not only realized the importance of sustainability but how widespread the issue is. I learned that there were many more things than just plastic waste and CO2 emissions which harmed the environment, and they were ones which didn't get much attention and they became ones I wanted to make a difference in.
My Project
For my Girl Scout Gold Award project, I am dedicated to raising awareness about the environmental impact of fast fashion and how we, as consumers, can make more sustainable fashion choices. Fast fashion significantly contributes to environmental degradation, making it essential for us to understand and address its consequences.
I came across this topic for my project while researching for issues in my community which I could address. While I knew about the impacts of things like plastic waste and greenhouse gases on our community, I didn't know just how vastly the issue expanded until I met with Jeanene Leppert from Inspired Threads, a non-profit committed to addressing waste in the fashion industry. I learned a shocking amount of information about just how much textile waste goes into the landfills on a yearly basis. I found that this was a topic very relevant to my generation, since educating young adults about the impacts of their consumer habits and encouraging them to shop mindfully could really create a change.

Through this project, I hope to educate my community on sustainable fashion practices and inspire others to make conscious choices that benefit both people and the planet. To support this mission, I am organizing a clothing swap event to encourage the exchange of used clothing. This initiative aims to educate people how to recycle clothes effectively, which reduces waste, lessen negative environmental impact. By participating in the swap event, we can take a meaningful step toward a more sustainable and connected community.
